Ewong'on Secondary School

The school was founded by Dr. Ole Kuney, chief of the Maasai. He believes that education is very important, especially for young Maasai as due to recent droughts and other factors, the tribe doesn’t have the resources and future it once had.

Currently, the school has classes up to From 4, where O-Levels are taught. There are about 230 students currently, which are a mix of girls and boys. Most of the students stay in the boarding house of the school, as many of them have to walk long distances to their home villages. The boarding house is very small and the mattresses are in bad shape, which leads to students having to share mattresses and in some cases, they have to sleep on the floor.

Another problem that the school is facing is the consequences of a broken water pump, which makes it hard for the students to get clean water. They have to walk long distances because of this.

The school has a modern science laboratory that was built with the help of sponsoring from the Swedish radio "Radiohjälpen". Currently, the plan from ISZL is to dedicate some of the money raised into repairing the water pump or buying a new one, to buy new beds and mattresses, new school supplies such as pens and pencils, providing the students with sports gear and footballs and to bring electricity to the school in order to have light during the night. Ultimately this would result in a much better living environment for the students that may very well contribute to a better learning environment.
