Artists' Market

Every year, the group goes to the local market in Arusha to pick up souvenirs for family and friends and to find accessories that could be sold later on at the Tanzania stall during international day or other special school events where parents have the opportunity to discover the students' projects. You can read a blog post about the stall here.
The market is an interesting experience for a foreigner, as it is radically different from what we are used to. The people selling their products can be very insisting, with phrases like "free to look", "best prices here" and "where are you from" "oh Switzerland, great country". After walking around for a few minutes, it is noticeable that most of the people sell the same things, or very similar ones. Many different types of objects can be bought there: decorative statutes, paintings, clothing, bracelets, necklaces, Tanzanian flags and the list goes on and on.
It is always an interesting experience negotiating the price of a product we're interested in. The prices they ask for to start with can easily be reduced to less than half of that. They obviously know that tourists won't too often question the price and put the money on the table as the prices are not unreasonable, but they know how to drop the price lower, but not too low. The market is definitely a must for someone visiting Arusha.
